Property no. 1005493
Holiday apartment for max. 3 persons
Tortorella, Cilento, Italy
Property with various apartments and an extensive natural site in the midst of a wonderful landscape with a lovely view and free bicycle hire
The property is situated at an altitude of around 700 metres on the south-west slope of a little hamlet six kilometres outside of the village of Tortorella at the Golfo di Policastro, on the southern edge of the UNESCO heritage-protected Cilento National Park, on the border between Campania and Basilicata.
It comprises four apartments of different sizes and for a different number of guests. When renovating the old building, attention was paid to using natural and typical local materials. Each apartment has central gas, wood-fired stove or fireplace hating. Hot water is generated by solar panels during the summer. Each of the two houses has an annex with a washing machine, dryer and iron for use free of charge. Wood for the fireplace stove (if applicable) and for grilling is provided. The lower building formerly served as stables, while the upper building, apart from residential purposes, also served for a while as a one-room school and as a local meeting place for dancing and singing.
The shared site with a meadow, vegetable garden and stone oak forest is terraced with stone walls and is not enclosed. Every residential unit has its own entrance and terraces with a panoramic view over the mountains and valleys of the Golfo di Policastro and the sea on the horizon. The adjoining stone oak forest just a few steps away has a wooden hut on stilts with a hammock, veranda, knotted rope and swing, inviting all ages to play, laze, read or observe the stars. Three to five parking spaces are available, shared with residents at the other holiday houses. Experience has shown that the parking space is sufficient.
The location is also suitable a starting point for hikers. Those who would like to hike can request advice and map material from the owners. Guided walks can also be arranged. Two adult bicycles (26” and 28”) can be used free of charge.
The neighbours run a little agricultural enterprise with cows, sheep, hens and vegetable cultivation, others live like nearly 50 years ago as shepherds and produce ricotta, pecorino and lamb. The charming village of Tortorella with a spectacular view, a grocery shop, a bar and a post office is about six kilometres away. It stands at an altitude of around 600 metres on a mountain top sloping down to the Tyrrhenian Sea through olive groves and forested areas and is limited to the west by the deep Bussentino gorge. From various viewing points you can look out over the sea and the coastal mountains of Calabria, the local mountain Monte Cocuzzo (1389m), Monte Cervati (1899m), the Monte Sacro to M. Bulgheria. The dreamy locality has preserved its original face to a large extent: natural stone houses with decorative portals are nestled onto the rocky slope, gardens open up towards narrow alleys. About 300 inhabitants meet to play cards at Giuseppe’s bar or to receive their pension payments at the post office, at the weekly market on Wednesdays, on Sundays at the church square. The locality comprises altitudes between 50 and 1480 metres with different vegetation zones, which offered the shepherds of the past pastures in every season. A side road not indicated on official maps, the so-called Tortorella-Mare, connects the locality with the coast in about 15 minutes by car. During the height of summer the altitude and the bordering stone oak forest provide pleasant coolness and a welcome change from beach life. In the midst of the gulf at Villamare you can find typical Italian beach life in summer with deckchair hire and bars. On the steep coasts at Acquafredda in the south and at Scario in the north there are a series of little bays with crystal clear water, some of which are difficult to get to.
